Botox
BOTOX (Botulinum
Toxin Type A) has become a very popular means as a short alternative to
cosmetic surgery in reducing facial wrinkles including frown lines, horizontal
forehead lines, crow feet around the eyes and certain lines around the mouth.
Frown lines are the vertical lines caused by contraction of muscles that lower
the central side of the eyebrows. The Botox injection causes the muscles to relax,
softening and sometimes completely eliminating the vertical lines.
What is BOTOX? - BOTOX is a pharmacological
agent which selectively interacts with muscles. BOTOX injections interact at
the junction of the motor nerve and the contracting muscle unit. BOTOX injections
interaction continues between 4 - 8 months in most patients. At the end of
this BOTOX
interaction, the muscle regains its original power and shape and unless further
BOTOX injections are administered, the muscle regains its full original function.
Is it safe? - BOTOX injections have been safely used for 20 years.
Initially BOTOX was introduced for neurological disorders and later adapted for cosmetic
indications. BOTOX Side effects are minimal. Swelling or bruises could occur. Patients
who are on other drugs such as antibiotics should advise the doctor in advance as
other drugs may act to increase or reduce potency of BOTOX injections.
How it is administered? - BOTOX is injected directly
into the muscles using a very thin needle. The procedure is relatively painless.
How long does Botox injections last? - BOTOX results in most patients develop
2 – 7
days after the injection and continue working for 4 – 8 months depending
on the patient, the size and strain of the muscle and the concentration of the
BOTOX solution injected.
New Applications - BOTOX is enjoying new popularity in the treatment of headaches
and in the treatment of facial skin pores. Please contact
