Breast lift
Breast lift is a cosmetic
surgical procedure designed to reshape sagging breasts. It can be performed
in conjunction with either breast enlargement or breast reduction. A variety
of techniques are available and during the consultation. Dr Fayman will ensure
that the cosmetic surgery which suits your individual requirements is selected.
Some techniques are specifically designed to retain the ability to breastfeed
after surgery, whereas others could eliminate such a possibility. In some women
a ‘short scar’ approach can be applied, reducing the length of the
scar to a minimum, particularly in the area under the breasts. The procedure
can be performed under general anaesthesia or in some patients under conscious
sedation supported with local anaesthesia. It is recommended that you discontinue
or drastically reduce smoking for six weeks before surgery. A mammogram may
also be recommended before the cosmetic surgery.
About the procedure - The breast cosmetic procedure
is designed and drawn on your chest before surgery, while you are still
in an erect position. The incisions can be designed to reduce the size
of the areola as well. Every effort is made to reduce the length of the
scar and to incorporate it into ‘hidden places’ such as the
interface of colour between the areola and the lighter skin of the breast.
The cosmetic surgery can be performed on an out-patient / day clinic
basis, but more commonly requires an overnight stay in hospital. Recovery
is usually uneventful. Pain is usually mild to moderate and is controllable
with painkillers. A supportive bra is recommended from day one after
the operation, for a couple of weeks after surgery. Swelling and discolouration
around the incisions usually subside within one or two weeks. There may
be a temporary loss of sensation in the nipples which in most cases,
returns to normal within a few weeks to months. One can usually resume
normal duties within ten to fourteen days and strenuous activity such
as gym, within three to four weeks.
What about the scars?
One of three cosmetic surgical approaches can be applied, depending on the
shape of your breasts and personal features.
The keyhole incision – This is the
most popular incision for cosmetic breast elevation and it results in a scar around
the areola, a vertical component and a cut under the breast.
The vertical scar – Beautiful breasts
are created by lifting the breasts through the areola and a vertical incision,
with no cut under the breast.
The peri-areolar incision – Breast
cosmetic surgery is accomplished using an incision placed in the interface
of colour on the border of the areola.
